Montreal Protocol - Sets a timetable for phasing out the use of ozone-depleting substances

Exxon Valdez - In 1989, a supertanker named Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound, releasing many millions of gallons of oil and devastating the marine ecosystem for thousands of miles of coastline.

Kyoto Protocol - Agreement among 150 nations (not the U.S.) to reduce greenhouse gases.

Anniston vs. Monsanto - In 2002, a investigation by 60 minutes revealed Anniston had been among the most toxic cities in the country. The source of local contamination was a Monsanto chemical factory. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were produced at the plant from 1929 until 1971. Anniston residents filed class action suits against Monsanto Company for knowingly dumping PCBs in west Anniston.

Wangari Maathai - a Kenyan environmental and political activist. In the 1970s, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization focused on the planting of trees, environmental conservation, and women's rights. In 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.”

Change in water temp - 1 degree C

B.O.D. - 7
(BOD is determined by taking a sample of water and wrapping it up in aluminum foil to prevent light from entering. After 5 days take the foil out and measure the dissolved oxygen. Take the initial D.O. and subtract the day 5 D.O. and you get the BOD. The aluminum foil is to prevent photosynthesis and the accumulation of oxygen.)
