Microgametophyte
In flowering plants there are two kinds of gametophytes. One kind, the microgametophyte, produces male gametes (sperm). The second kind, the megagametophyte, produces female gametes (eggs). Both kinds of gametophytes are greatly reduced in size, they consist of just a few cells, and both are also nutritionally dependent on the sporophyte. From your recent study of the flower you have learned that megagametophyte growth begins in the ovary of the carpel and microgametophyte growth begins in the anther of the stamen. In this tutorial you will learn how the microgametophyte is produced by the anther of the sporophyte and how the microgametophyte bcomes an independent stage of the flowering plant.
